Re: What can I do to survive as a mage?

As a wizard, you start with several of the best spells to handle any kind of dangerous situation you'll find before the end of the lair. Mephitic Cloud completely disables and sometimes kills every poison vulnerable creature you'll find during that time, including all uniques you're likely to see as...

Re: Rod of Striking

Shotgun-like effects are much desired, but difficult to implement. How about a burst instead -- sort of like Mystic Blast can be a single target or burst spell, depending on range, this could toggle between the two based on number of charges.

Re: Curses

Is anyone a fan of sticky curses on floor items? Because scrolls of identify are usually better used on artifacts/jewelry/potions/other scrolls, use-IDing is the main way to ID weapons and armor. Remove curse scrolls effectively a scroll of "allow yourself to use-ID until you hit a curse"....

Re: Rod of Striking

If the "instant" option is chosen, I'd love to see the interface ask how many charges to fire and fire all of them without asking for extra input. Dropping 14+ attacks via v + target wouldn't necessarily be the worst interface ever, but it does seem somewhat bad.

Rod of Striking

So, it seems like the consensus is that rods of striking are terrible. They're relatively rare, but most people consider them to be worse than a non-magical staff (as I understand it). No characters start with them, and it sounds like no characters should ever pick up one to use them. It seems that ...

Incidentally, does anyone know what the maximum damage for a Yaktaur Captain's crossbow bolt, and ideally how that damage is modified by brand?

Re: HaAr YASD: who knew Yaktaurs could do 50 damage per shot

Yeah, lesson definitely learned on stepping away from the Yaktaur Captain. Good to know re: sling bullets -- I had a vague sense that they were more common than that, but that's from seeing them over and over on characters who didn't pick them up, so I never got a running tally . . . As for armor ch...

Re: Curses

This all sounds awful. I would never ever wield anything unidentified ever again, even if it meant transporting items to orc and letting orcs pick it up and try it first. I'm assuming here that the fact that an item is cursed would auto-ID, even if the specific curse isn't known. Should have mentio...

Re: Curses

Let me put in another vote for a curse overhaul like the one I suggested at the end of the other curse thread. The basic premise would be 1) curses aren't sticky and instead do something else, 2) there are no scrolls of remove curse (or maybe a very rare 1-item target scroll), 3) curses appear on ot...

Re: Revamped God of the Wilds proposal

It's perfectly feasible. Take Oka for example, he supports stealth, but also supports not going stealth. Ash also really helps stabbers, but he's great for pretty much everyone else too. Yeah, but Ash and Oka both actively support wearing body armor (armor gifts and bound slots, respectively). This...

Re: HaAr YASD: who knew Yaktaurs could do 50 damage per shot

Oh, I should point out that sling bullets were really hard to come by this game. I found a grand total of ~200, I think, and the branded ones I had at the end were 99% of the branded ammo I found all game. That was a big part of my decision to go for the demon blade and train it up.

HaAr YASD: who knew Yaktaurs could do 50 damage per shot?

Cardy was an artificer halfling of Nemelex who dabbled in slings during that awkward starting period. The dungeon was unusually light in sling bullets, however, so he was forced to branch out to a demon blade he found much later in the dungeon (I think it was in a lava-surrounded vault full of demon...

Re: Curses

For those of you who want curses to play a bigger role in the game, what would that role be? Should they be: a) foreseeable penalty that you get for bad play, b) a consequence of fighting powerful monsters, c) an arbitrary imposition from a cruel universe, d) a barrier to fully exploring/identifying...

Re: Should I try to erase my mutation?

Deformed body cuts 1/2 of your base armor AC. If you're heavily armored and have a lot of armor skill, that could be a very significant drop in AC. Otherwise, probably not worth trying to cure it.

Re: Artificers

I appreciate the tip about trolls of Nemelex, but the issue isn't that I can't figure out Nemelex, it's that I don't really enjoy playing him that much. Let me change the discussion slightly: aside from rods of destruction, what other non-wand evocable items are worth investing time/skill into makin...

Re: Revamped God of the Wilds proposal

I'm not sure if it's feasible to have the god support both charging rhino and stalking predator gameplay. Even if the bonuses to combat are large enough to allow a brute force approach, the stealth approach will always be the optimal choice, because you keep all of the melee power bonuses that allow...

Re: Spriggan Wizard skill strategy

Getting Mephitic Cloud and/or Conjure Flame is probably more important than Repel Missiles or Slow -- I'd recommend you hold off on those two until getting at least one if not both of Mephitic Cloud / Conjure Flame. They'll get you out of way more trouble, and you should be able to still get Repel M...

Artificers

Hey all, I recently got interested in artificers after playing a string of DsWanderers (as a palate cleanser), and having one become very successful after finding an early Nemelex shrine and also a rod of destruction in the Lair. I can see that Nemelex is very powerful, but he's also irritating. So,...

Re: Revamped God of the Wilds proposal

"Top of the Food Chain" feels very odd. How about "Primal" instead? +1 for pounce only targeting confused/paralyzed/sleeping/etc creatures. Since this god likes hunting and stalking, maybe the 6-star ability should be something to conceal you from your prey. For example, it could...

If we just want to make shields a better choice, we should expand the number of things things that shields can block, and perhaps also lower the penalty for additional blocks per turn. Either or both of these bonuses could increase with Shields skill and/or with the size of the shield. It seems reas...

The loot dispensing seems reversed - you're giving star items in the version with dead defenders. If you just want to get across the point that you've got corpses and equipment strewn about from the finished game, specifically set the equipment (and make it average quality, so it's not really a bon...

I can't comment on the vault details, but I think it would be neat if the before/after have non-intersecting areas to be found in, and the after is deeper than the before, and the after appears if and only if the before has appeared. This might not be possible. What's the intention of having player...

Do toadstools still wither away on their own? If that happened and something woke the jellies, the whole loot stack could get munched before it was even seen. In which case it's still a Jiyva altar vault with appropriate monsters. Fair question. According to LearnDB, they do wither. I don't know wh...

Second try at a vault, this time a pair of vaults, one representing a chessboard of monsters set up and ready to battle, the second being the same chessboard after the monsters have fought and killed one another.
