It is usually hard to get high-end weppons without oka/trog, so you can:
2x long sword -> double sword
greatsword +2x long sword -> triple sword
2x hand axe -> lajatang
broad axe + quarterstaff +whip(to tie) -> bardiche
2x bardiche -> exec axe
morningstar + 10x dagger -> eveningstar

Just don't interrupt 5ing if your allies attack harmless monsters. There was a special flag for em.
Sometimes it is the desired behaviou for your pets to cut their way to you. For example your allies may get stuck in a large pack of bushes and stay behind while you are exploring.

You're not guaranteeing that a monster will be dead in X attacks by picking maces, since you could always just miss, not to mention AC and monster hp randomization. You can't guarantee it, but the spread for a particular monster ...
