Make it so that you can only cast it if you'll bump up against a monster, who'd then get some status effect as a result. Perhaps short-lived confuse, like a guaranteed hit confusing touch?

I often quaff mutation potions as soon as I find them, until I gain a healthy list of white and red muts. Then I try to win the game regardless. It's great fun, at least for me.

Because of ghouls and perhaps trolls, I'd leave the meat chunks mechanic unchanged, just make them inedible unless you are carnivorous. It would also make sense from a flavor perspective (sorry for the pun). As for vamps, I'd probably make blood potions permanent and purchasable in batches from food...

Sure, as long as it gave the same overall amount as you'd get from chunks.

I'd agree with this, except for those lovely mutagenic chunks, so one may freely partake in the obscene mutation roulette. I'd also only slightly increase the availability of perma food, if at all. IMO, being driven by a proper hunger clock (and not just a slight nudge as it presently stands) would ...

I like the idea as well. Maybe have the aptitudes a bit lower to compensate for the huge skill boost the manual gives. Overall it sounds like a great concept.

Also, while in lich form, death's door won't work, and you can't quaff. If you were in distress and wanted to do either, i like it that there is a strategic cost of 1 turn for reverting to human form.

Careful with casting darkness a lot early on, it has a large hunger cost which, for a sp, is a bit of a problem.
As for regen, use it as you would for any other archetype - early and often.
