Is this possible?

Does Crawl have a way of assigning a permanent identifier to an object? Angband & sons iirc have something like this: you can inscribe an object with a number and from that point on you can use that number interchageably with the letter identifying the object. I.E. you inscribe your potions of h...

Re: Necromancers

As well as Pikel's chance of carrying one, Grinder always has some weapon of pain (the base type varies, usually a hammer, whip, club or dagger). Having pain weapons be so common in the early game actually rather annoys me; when you can almost always rely on finding a pain weapon early it completel...

A ring of fire definitely boosts damage more than 3 int. Watch out though, as rings of fire give you cold vulnerability; with 2 on you'll die painfully to the first kobold with a wand of frost.

Necromancers

I'm used to play necromancers (usually DDNe of Makhleb) mostly as vampiric draining spamming melee characters, but right now I'm trying to play them with more emphasis on spellcasting. I have a VpNe of Kiku who's doing fine so far (just finished clearing the Lair); Agony is wonderful, Vampiric Drain...

Re: Things that should be more transparent

a +0,+10 hand axe actually does far less damage than a +0,+0 battleaxe Wait, what? My understanding is that a +0,+10 hand axe's base damage is 1d7 + 1d10 while a +0,+0 battleaxe's is 1d17, and when you also take into account speed, accuracy, handedness and weight, the hand axe is definitely prefera...

Re: YAVP - my second ever win :)

I really don't get how to milk Ash for ridiculous skill training like everyone seems to be doing :( I'm playing a HEWz of Ash atm, and my skills are maybe just a little bit ahead of what they would usually be. I only had 2 bound items until around the time I got the first 2 runes (horrible loot thou...

Re: What species do you never play?

I've seen many complaints about Vampires, which is sad. We got a patch from Jarmo and tried to make something unique and cool out of it. If we have messed it up, the species may just gracefully resign. One indication that matters are not ideal is how bloodless is encouraged - the original concept w...

Re: SpVM, found Party tricks, what to learn?

When using Summon Butterflies (most overpowered lvl 1 spell together with Confusing Touch for unarmed fighters), keep in mind meatshields are no use against bolt-type spells (and smiting, obviously). Boris taught me that lesson in a painful way :(

Re: Alistair's Intoxication - is Clarity necessary?

I never tried it myself, but I imagine you could always un-confuse youself with a potion of healing. You won't be able to spam Alistair's Intoxication all day long, but if plan on using it only in select occasions (Vaults:8 ), I guess it would work.

Re: Beginner KoBe advice

I (obviously) haven't been finding a lot of equippable items. Hopefully Orc Mines will be good for this. Is it just me or do shields, cloaks, helmets, and boots never seem appear? There's no shortage of armor out there, but everything else is scarce. Unfortunately monsters, except for the odd uniqu...

Re: Felid crusader god?

I'd choose Nemelex, or Ash for free XP and reskilling (it's easy to get bound slots on a Felid) Maybe I'm misunderstanding how Ashenzari works (haven't tried yet), but aren't you limited to a third of the slots on a Felid (i.e. only 2x piety and max 15% exp bonus)? Besides, with only 3 slots to jug...

Re: What species do you never play?

Humans: the boring average. Demigods: the challenge version of humans? No thanks :P Mountain Dwarves, Minotaurs, Trolls, Ogres, etc: I find melee characters boring. Hill Orcs: see above; for the Beogh priest version: never tried, the tought of herding orcs for the whole game puts me off so much that...

Re: Spriggan Enchanter skills

(1) If you're playing a pre 0.8 version, you'll find enchantments trains pretty fast even if you keep if off. If you keep it on, with the spriggan's awesome aptitude you'll probably max it halfway through the dungeon, which obviously is no bad thing, except it'll monopolize your XP. In 0.8 on the ot...

cganya: good point, although I doubt it would be a problem until one reaches very high levels in unarmed combat. As it is, I may occasionally go from near bloodless to very thirsty for a couple dozen turns, which doesn't bother me at all. Could be important to keep it in mind though, should I find m...

Vampire Enchanter

Vampire Enchanter is a combo I've been obsessing over for a while. The main thing I find attractive about them compared to the good ol' SpEn is that spell hunger is not only pretty meaningless for them, but being hungry makes their sneaky shenanigans even easier. With Spriggans I typically die befor...
