From what I understand, shields aren't that useful in the extended endgame as is, because torment/hellfire/paralysis don't care how much SH you have. Depending on the god - nemelex/yred come first to mind - faith is practically broken. It's useful for the other gifters too, and also those gods who's best skills are spammable and burn piety.

In two of my four wins (all .10 trunk), I used my first acquirement to get a weapon that carried me from pre-Lair to the end (speed lajatang / elec demon trident). They were so good that they effectively broke most of the game for me. Maybe I've just been lucky?

Tab is 'autofight the closest monster in view'. It sounds like the command is working correctly when dudes aren't around ('no unsafe monsters...'), but as to why you're getting 'unknown command' when dudes are around, I can't say. Have you changed the config file/controls at all from standard?
