If you do not know how to deal with hellfire attacks then do not do the Elf, then. You're gonna have deal with that in Zot:1-5 where there are similar draconians as DE high priests and DE sorcerers. I don't know if this is universally good advice coz i'm no good at battle mathematics: I would fight unarmed for some time (while fighting being the only skill on) and hoping of finding a good weapon. Wiki is considered bad because it is not (and cannot be) 100% accurate and not every 'tips and tricks' are documented. It still is a pretty good source of basic information.

Deep elf sorcerer does not use hellfire when it's next to you. Deep elf high priests and draconian zealots/scorchers are the ones who use hellfire burst even on melee range.

For me "EV based melee" generally means LOTS of buff spells (Regen, OzoArmour, Butterflies, Haste, Shroud, Swiftness, Rmsl, summoning spells.. just to mention a 'few') and ranged attacks. The deeper as you go in the dungeon, you will find low AC to be very goddamn crippling, stealthy or not.

This is an old trick and might even be dangerous without caution but nevertheless:

Using enslavement on a giant eyeball in the Slime Pits (and everywhere else where they show up) can make your life a lot easier. Especially for a stabby character.

Butterfly barrier followed by LRD makes many ranged foes (stone giants, yaktaur packs) so trivial that in most cases they cannot hit you even once
