Right now while you don't have skill in anything, plinking away with that crossbow is a decent move and will help reward you for letting monsters come to you instead of charging them. I'd keep it until you have a decent amount of throwing skill, assuming inventory isn't actually driving you mad yet :)

Perhaps we could have a special altar-specific portal through which the player can sense the presence of an altar or gets some other hint. A portal taking a player near an altar would already be different than regular abyss portals.

FWIW, I enjoy the hunt for a weapon on D1. It's this quick little mini task that gives me satisfaction to complete, and adds some variety to the early game. I wouldn't want to give it up in exchange for off-theme equipment that's the same every time.

IMHO summons don't work great along with fire spells, especially fireball. I would learn lightning bolt, and you already have lightning spire.
