You just stumbled into a vault (a pre-defined area of the dungeon that can have special characteristics). The flame clouds are just a feature of said vault; the 'X's indicate that autotravel won't take you into that area.

I love it when I'm playing a Fire Elementalist and I encounter lots of OOD melee threats. D:6 troll? Sticky Flame. D:8 Hill Giant? Sticky Flame. If the RNG is kind to you with very few OOD monsters, lots of good items, and just about everything you need pre-Lair, it will suddenly turn on you and spawn Mara, Saint Roka, and Snorg just inside Snake:1.

I had no clue Mara could spawn that early.

I think that the page sounds, in general, very reasonable and will go a long way towards making T&D feel more like the other skills, especially the trap creation idea. I'm a bit skeptical of monster traps, but I imagine they'd make more sense if I actually saw them when implemented.
