Please stop advising beginners to unequip shields on starting fighters, it's bad advice anyway, the shield will still block most of attacks at skill 0... and being shieldless would mean more deaths for them. If they want to play shieldless, let them choose another background.

Your ideas are interesting but they dont address the actual issue, and that is the loss of kill power. They aren't for most characters. For heavy melee they are much underpowered compared to the xp to invest (exp. for large shields). Who's going in melee with a normal shield? Who does that with a large shield?

So against a single attack, the more skilled you are, the less likely you are to block it, unless it's high damage. That seems very counter-intuitive. Also it would be very difficult to implement. Attacks are handled in sequence, so if the kobold shoots first the game doesn't even know that the yaktaur is also going to shoot. You can try to memorize 100% fail spells by quaffing a potion of brilliance. This way you still have 100% failure while casting them, but having them memorized means you can train spellcasting and the spell schools.

Try to find and train a branded longblade (fire/freeze is nice, but chopping or drain is good too). You already are shieldless so a two-handed longblade should be nice.

I think werewolves could have damage shaving like deep dwarf and keep standard healing. This mimics "superhuman" regeneration quite well as seen in some literature while differentiating them from trolls.

Of course that means it just encourages much more tedious behaviour (walk over every staircase/escape hatch if you think you might use it ever, etc.) I think that this can be a tactital choice, wasting real time and turns or not having a particular efficient path in case you have to travel the dung...

Nope, the portals are 2 Snake Pits. One of them is a mimic. I don't think he entered the Slime Pits yet.
