If you are consistently pushing the item slot limit you are very likely carrying way too much junk to begin with. Unless you are a Nemelex worshiper, I don't see the item slot limit being a reasonable strain on any character.

What if Jiyva was just made less bad for nearly every build/combo except in the extreme late game, and even then there are usually better choices it seems like. Seems like such a great god concept without but one that is rarely used because of some of the effect (namely jellys eating all your shit)

It's a good idea to buff yourself completely before going down every staircase or gate. Especially on a mummy, you have all the time in the world and can easily rest off glow. Press Ctrl+G to see discovered branches. If you have cleared through D13 and don't see (L)air, then you missed it. I would suggest clearing the Lair (8 levels) and then the Orcish Mines (4 levels) before doing anything else.
