I don't think you're supposed to spam hungering spells in the first place as a caster. Usually you want spells that you use all the time to become hungerless as soon as possible prioritizing it above pretty much anything else. Nausea is more of a nerf for Berserkers, as hunger cost for Berserk can't...

I find that the most useless mutations are horns, claws, talons, etc., since you'll eventually lose an armor slot. It would be great to see auxiliary attacks actually worth something so this doesn't feel like an irreversible cripple. Claws 3 give +6 base damage and bleeding to Unarmed. Not useless ...

Acquiring weapons is almost always a bad idea. If you're not going to cast spells, acquire staff (rod). Rod of destruction[ice], Rod of abjuration or Rod of demonology can make life so much easier, especially since you don't have any kind of range option but wands which won't last too long.

Plus, "classic" stealthy, stabby KoBe isn't the only way to play this combo and kobolds aren't that bad at m&f. The problem is that merfolks aren't too good with anything but polearms, so giving them a spear at the start would only make sense as you will eventually switch to one anyway.

As for why it takes forever to kill things, unbranded Short Blades are not very effective against high AC monsters and speed brand is probably the worst for this weapon type, pretty much any directly damaging brand is superior to it. Training up Maces & Flails might be a good idea, I think.
