Zot Defence use to be nearly impossible when you had to use exp instead of zot points. Now, a broad range of characters have a decent chance...Zot Defence is even more unpredictable than normal Crawl though... Why didn't you play in the tournament? Both games would have generated a nice pile of points, and you were in the right time window.
Plus, you would have gotten the TrMo, OgWz, Tr, and Mo high score. Just a thought

If you really want to, don't do it over deep water, giants can swim. Lava is pretty safe, though.
Don't forget a ring of sustenance too -- wrath takes a while.
