This is not true. The clustering is real but there is no underlying reason for it. It is belief in such a reason that leads to the illusion that the clustering has occurred because of anything other than chance.

Sounds like my experience so I'm glad it's not just me. I guess Elf 1 and 2 are probably OK, particularly if you have Trog to back you up. The only danger is being tempted down to Elf 3 for all the loot - while failing to consider all the nasties...

I've never had a character in which I trained up evocations; my melee-ers usually just don't do anything ranged (which is obviously a limitation). It is now clear to me that I missing a trick - and I can see how the combination with Makhleb adds to the fun.

Congratulations! I've managed a spell-less 15-rune win before (also with a GrFi) but I've never cleared a zig that way. I guess the secret lies in your multiple rods and all those lamps of fire...
