I could see that actually being a good idea, provided (a) the piety gained scaled with current piety (2--3 stars at 0 piety, nothing at *****.) and (b) taking it prevented you from ever abandoning Ru.

And "magical" could be an actual non-flavor problem for newbies, since magic has an in-game meaning having nothing to do with double/triple swords.

And... V:5 did not go well. Everything was fine until I had to deal with 2 vault wardens at once; died before the teleport could kick in. I guess I should have read teleportation as soon as I saw there were two, without even trying to kill them.

It's certainly gotten harder for me; only one win in the last few months (I generally play trunk) and only one run with runes so far in the tournament (and no wins). Glad I'm not imagining things, at least.

Good luck. I just lost my MfBe trying for 4; three scrolls of summoning and berserk was enough to kill TRJ but not enough to survive the aftermath. Still got a combo highscore, which I don't always manage in tournaments. (On which topic, yay strat for getting many combo highscores.)

Alas, my minotaur was banished by a distortion weapon. And I was greedy and waited too long before using Lugonu's Abyss-leaving power, by which point I could be one-shot back in Shoals. Starting with a DDMo^Makhleb. Now on L:2 with a flail of draining. The nerfing of Makh's heal-on-kills is very noticeable; so far I don't seem to be at risk of running out of MP but at three stars I still need to use the innate heal.

Pretty sure Ice Form doesn't cut off hydra heads (though Blade Hands does); and Armour skill does nothing to base AC, so it's useful on a Draconian only to increase the AC from aux armour (so practically almost useless).

HP == maxHP with heal on kills was intended primarily to solve the "keep weak enemies alive" problem, and to get rid of the strong incentive to use Makhleb. I agree that you would still be strongly incentivized to avoid taking damage; but you'd also be strongly incentivized to kill things....

I see it just as the "you must use Makhleb" species at the moment (yes, I once won a DDBe, but it was tedious and unfun). I don't have a problem with it, but it doesn't have much to do with strategic HP.

Personally, I'd rather go the other direction of being the heal-on-kill species. That is, current HP and maxHP are the same thing, so no other form of healing works at all (in particular, no more innate heal-wounds); but you get an HP increase for everything you kill.

Agreed; the only draconian I ever won (IIRC) was a DrTm in 0.16 bugbuild. I'd switch them with deep dwarves; those are "easy" if you go with Makhleb, at least, though I suppose that would need to be communicated clearly to actual newbies.

Also --- does piety decay even matter in realistic situations? Yes, I suppose if one is right at a breakpoint then one could go below it backtracking or something; but then one gets it back in the next nontrivial fight. I'd rather just have somewhat slower gain.

I think the early game is easier than the rest of the game largely in that it's simpler (which makes it easier to get good at it) and most of us have far more practice with it; I'm not sure it's intrinsically easier.

I think it's good for clarity; but Sigmund should probably be nerfed somewhat; I recently lost a character to him without being confused, which almost never used to happen. Unless, I suppose, he's supposed to be a "run away at sight" monster; but those are rather boring.
