Teleport trap on entry stairs is a bit extreme but this could have just as well happened anywhere else in Zot:5 and still be tough. You should have hasted before grabbing the Orb but I assume there would still have been a very good chance of dying without a second chance.

Xv is your friend . Even more so when you see something you don't understand.

I don't want to sound too harsh... but that kind of fight or flight reflex will get all of your mummies killed if you can't reign it in. They are very, very unforgiving of player mistakes.

I like Portal Projectile. Cast outside Spectre range, move in LoS, deliver Javelins to the face until they cease to exist.

Also, sticky flame breath may be sufficient provided you find a Wand of Digging. Carve out the lower right corner of the vault, move in, Sticky Flame the plant, move behind the wall for cover. Repeat the last three steps until profit. Repeat the same process for the other plants as well.

After you grab the rune from the Vaults, don't stick around and fight the rest of the enemies. Eventually a Tentacled Monstrosity will grab you and prevent you from stairdancing at the worst time. -2 Dex is easily bearable - but the weapon itself is likely to get outclassed by a future Trog gift anyway. I say this can be your Lair and maybe early Spider Nest weapon but past that, you want more raw damage.

I like doing the Hall of Blades on SpEn or the like. If you are careful enough the risk is basically zero, and the experience you gain is pretty good. Für Demigods and Lugonu it makes a lot of sense. If this is already being implemented, I would in addition suggest for Yred/Kiku/Makhleb vs. the Good Gods to be able to sabotage their altars. At least the good gods could benefit a lot from engaging in the battle against evil early on.

So... it's pretty much the D&D Bard. Not unfathomable but I really doubt that a new school is what Crawl needs right now. Most "classic" Bard spells already exist as either Charms or Hexes and the poetry school would find it hard to produce spells that don't fall into those categories.

I like Feline Fighters as Pseudo-Artificiers. Their unarmed prowess gives them some survivability until you can reliably draw from decks. I haven't managed to bring one to Zot yet, though this is probably more my fault rather than the cats.

I think my favorite would be Makhleb. You already have Demonic Guardian and spamming an army from two sources is a totally viable lategame strategy. Of course there is nothing wrong with Sif Muna/Vehumet either. Only from Chei I would refrain until you know what your body slot mutation is.

Read-identifying a scroll of immolation can be even more dangerous when you are surrounded by four ghoul friendlies who suddenly decide to not be friendly anymore. This prelude to YASD was made even more embarassing by the fact that immolation was the last unidentified type of scroll in the game.
