I usually don't have problems to kill Gloorx if i have Fire Storm together with necromutation. Dispel Undead has a limited range and she usually dies quickly, usually melee-ing a fire vortex. Still, kind of brutal if you are just scooting around in pan and have only a hellion island or a random pan lord room as dangers in mind.

Berserker is an excellent starting background, but if you want to go for 15 runes it is much easier to leave trog at some time, to plan accordingly and take up spellcasting (for example not burning all spellbooks you encounter). abyss is very varying, sometimes you survive with a lvl 12 char, sometimes you get really nasty situations with a endgame char.
too bad that you did find so many enemies you could not run from, i found running much easier with the new abyss as even blocked exits sometimes open up after a few turns.

I agree on Sif, the early game is easier with Vehumet, you have spells guaranteed and get wizardry for conj/summ, but in lichform Sif channeling is really nice. I like Isky, at least until you can get a Bolt of Cold online via high conjuration skill alone.
Bolt of Magma is a bit lackluster, i highly prefer Bolt of Fire.
Firestorm is still a bit away skill-wise, and miscasts are pretty ugly, especially if they cost 9MP.
