I started with the original Linley's, old school baby, old school!

Never won the original but got to Zot, probably even zot:5 with a troll berserker. I played Nethack and ADOM before that, also tried Angband but didn't really get into it before TOME.

Check your weapons stash, you ought to have something better than a +4 +3 flail for zot. rFire ++ is plenty enough provided that you actually can kill OOF's within a reasonable time period or evade them completely (the latter is very possible before zot:5 but hard on that level).

That trident is not very good at dealing damage. If you are are willing to train more polearms, then definitely go with the bardiche. If not, then the glaive is probably a good option too option. You should probably use the one with speed. Switch to battleaxe/exec axe once you get one with a (good) brand (and not uselessly negatively enchanted like some of the crap artifacts Oka gives you). Use the flaming one against hydras. Don't carry around scrolls of enchant weapon.
