The drain from Shadow form is no different from regular drain, getting more XP makes it go away. Taking a lot of damage while it lasts will increase the amount drained, however. Be mindful of that.

Portal projectile is a good spell for any ranged character, learn it if a book with it has appeared. Be aware of the water tiles around, some creatures in swamp get a movement speed bonus when in water. If you fight Lerny in :4 you can use the phantom mirror for an easy win.

It's still incredibly dull to use killholes without any pressing need , though. You don't exactly face groups of smiters/pproj naga/other nasties which would force that for a significant part of the game anyway. And there are spells and consumables that can achieve the same or more favorable results...
