It depends on which website you play on. Usually it's fairly obvious which branches are playable. They tend to be labelled "0.22", "0.23", "trunk", etc. Some they're only visible once you've logged in.

Sif will start giving you books soon, so so long as you have enough to survive lair is advicable to train the spell school you want to specialise in the highest. Summoning is good, but any other spell school would also work. Get throw icicle castable for hydras etc, but don't worry too much about it...

I meant wrt this specific character & player, I'm not certain whether he should (in the mid/late game) start using PoG to sneak up on monsters to sleep-stab them. It's a satisfying but risky strategy, because you sometimes end up standing right next to a group of awake angry monsters.

Cause fear and Passage of Golubria can be incredibly helpful for hexers. (PoG helps you stab stuff and also helps you escape.)

As for whether you should be stabbing if you actually want to win, I don't know.

I think most people would train xbows to 21, and use triple crossbow + heroism for all hard fights. Heroism is twice cheaper than finesse, and arguably just as powerful.

Permanent allies can follow you across levels. Being able to bring a half dozen allies humans into Pan/Slime/etc would be a bit bizar, to say the least ;)

Allied pikel humans could also cause unintentional Oka / Zin wrath, if you use AOE spells.

You can probably use Mephitic Cloud + Ignite Poison in place of Conjure Flame.
Many of the ambushes you describe could have been avoided if you had more stealth skill. It sounds like you're already exploring carefully.

It's an interesting proposal.
It would be a big change to disallow effect that change how long a movement action takes instead of only disallowing effects that change how long a standard turn (such as quaffing or evoking) takes.
Disallowing Chei would add flavour, but I'd be sad to lose Fo^Chei.
