Yeah, but Gargoyles are more sentient and capable of thinking, whereas ghouls, at first thought, really don't seem to be like that. I would agree with you otherwise.

Okawaru's wrath is kinda easy to deal with at your point. I would go with Lugonu for a bit. If you have an amulet of faith, take it off and on a few times to drain piety so that any wrath that you would get is minimized, then convert.
