Re: CIP SpEn What now?

Second time I ever cleared Snake 5 I got that vault. It was with a conjurator, so it was a *little* easier. It was slow though. Shadow Creatures/Summon Imps, step down the stairs, fight until adjacent to Greater Naga or naga Mage or two, then pull them up the stairs, blink away, and slowly whittle t...

Re: Diversifying Conjurations

Right, I understand. Take what I said as more of a suggestion for consolidation, mebbe? I was just thinking that if you had something to contrast with "necromantic" magic, i.e. something involving "change" rather than the stasis of the undead, flavor-wise, a poison is basically j...

Re: Diversifying Conjurations

Out of curiosity, is there a reason that poison magic is separate from transmutations? I could see them (in a more symmetrical spell school system) being consolidated into some sort of "Life" magic, Transmut representing some sort of re-functioning of a thing or material, while traditional...

I could've traveled through time. Morgue file I was absolutely ready for Vault 1 by any measure. Hive cleared, Lair cleared, Orc cleared, Swamp and Elf down to 4. I had awesome equipment, at least two pips of cold and fire resistance, a clarity amulet, a rMut, an rCorr and a Conservation brand. The ...

Re: Hexes and Magic Resistance

Yes but it does not kill them. Most non-hex spells outright kill the target. Yes it takes several castings often, but the target ends up dead. So how is taking several castings of a hex to make the victim "completely trivial" better then making the victim dead? Well, for me at least, it's...

I'm not sure I'm down with completely making a cursed blunt weapon a non-issue for the food game. I know. However, it does not take 100 turns to regenerate your mana. Much less than that. Like 40-50 turns. That's why I said the hunger cost is still greater with FCloud.

Re: CIP - HE Conjurer - Now what?

I've always preferred Poison Arrow to OOD. More reliable, less turns to kill, no accidents. OOD has the main advantage that it's a single school spell in a school you WILL have very high as a blasty magey type, but I find myself leaning on PA more and more as the game goes on.

I've used it to clear out dangerous vaults with spellcasters if I don't have cTele. For instance, in the secret room ending of Lair, you can put a passage right by the exit, then another right by the door, open it, and pop to safety to cast some nice clouds.

Re: [Orc Priest Smiting] Beogh is a P-word

In terms of flavor, Beogh is no more of a pansy god (in the sense of "Here, let me do everything for you") than Trog, who sends nigh-unstoppable killing machines to do all your dirty work for you, get hit with all your curses, etc. You have to look at it from the gods' perspective: Killing...

Let me just say that I do appreciate the advice, especially Mephitic Cloud, which I just hadn't thought about. I just think you might be wrong on the spell hunger math. Re: CIP - HE Conjurer - Now what?

With shields (as opposed to bucklers), you need skill at 15 to get rid of spellcasting penalty. I think the penalty's worse too, but I'm not sure. You can do CTRL-F and search for a buckler. If nothing else, you will almost always find one on the first level of Elf, which isn't all that hard. Tons o...

Re: CIP - HE Conjurer - Now what?

Get rid of Throw Frost. You really need to be meleeing weak creatures, I say, for Fighting and Dodging EXP. Also Shield. You have a buckler, right? The penalty to spellcasting is completely eliminated at Shields 5 for a buckler.

@asdu: Fire storm's smite targeting and fire damage seems more useful for some of the post-endgame content. I might be wrong. The option of having that manual is what pushes me towards it-- I can easily get the skill up really high, really fast. I fully intend to use both to great effect. The smite ...

Grimm, I'm sort of with you. It's less a stress with a melee character and/or rPois, but any near-pure caster is going to have a hard time in Hive. I've spent an hour just clearing out the bees-- Get close to the hive, shout, blink back to the stairs and ping as many to death as possible before Thro...

Yeah, when you put Fireball beside Refrigeration it looks sort of sucky. The self-damage and potion-shattering is a good mitigation, but dropping your potions and going Ice Form (why not? more HP, more strength, rPois) makes it an easy win button. It even kills U-Boat Gators in Swamp.

All of my gear with resists sucked. A lot of them had negs to Int and Dex or Str. This is AFTER raiding the Vault. :-(

I also had a lack of enchant armor scrolls. Why is that a deal? +5 Ice Dragon Armor to get into a trove, hopefully with some good gear.

Ech, also: For the thin-robe types, is a weapon of protection better than other brands early game, or does the lack of heavy armor make even quadrupling your AC from 2 to 8 somewhat worthless in the early game?

Here's a question I'm curious about: I've always raised Spellcasting as my highest magic skill for general casters. Is this a good idea, or should Spellcasting be turned off at a certain point, or be below a most-used spell school like Conjurations or Charms/Hexes?

My issue with air elementalists is that, unlike the others (arrows, icicles, etc), there is no higher-level midgame emergency attack spell. You're resigned to using Shock as your offensive weapon unless you hybrid early (dangerous for any magic-apt class) or get lucky and find some other spellbook. ...

I generally don't dump after a death because I take it as a sure sign to immediately go to bed. :-) Hence why I described the deaths instead.
