Re: More advice for a newbie?

You can find out more about reducing the attack delay here: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots As for spells, Throw Frost/Flame are both good to learn once you get Vehumet's first book. Mystic Blast is good to learn from the second book. You do not always want to learn/use the highest level spel...

Re: New player help

@ XrBob: glad to hear you had fun with that. As a general rule, when playing casters, I tend to rest to regain full mp before exploring. You can't always do that, of course, but try. It helps improve survivability. Also, try worshipping Vehumet. If you start as a conjurer, Vehumet's first gift will ...

You don't suck. You won the game in what, less than 14 total gaming hours? That's pretty darn good.

Re: New player help

Looking at a selected history is not an accurate representation of the truth. That is what I am trying to explain. The evidence of a player's win/loss ratio on an on-line server is not a true representation of that player's win/loss ratio in this game unless that player has played 100% of their game...

Well, this would explain why you think so many things in the game are "overpowered." Clearly, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/scoring/players/casmith789.html Same person. Megabat was casmith789's one-off streak account, I believe. And a 13-game streak does indicate being a rather good player. And now you have proven my point: the data you pointed to ("hyperelliptic's" history) is not ev...

Put the portal on a timer is fine. Make you rush towards it is fine. So let's surround all portals with Cerebov and Royal Jelly clones. That'll increase the "risk" and make it loads of fun. I'm not saying that all portals should be easy to reach. Balance of the risk is what I am talking ab...

Underpowered is also a meaningless term. Compared to what other "stuff" in the game? Would you want Conjure Flame or Mephitic Cloud if you run into Grinder backed by another imp? The context is fluid. Hence the terms are meaningless. Statistics are funny things. http://crawl.akrasiac.org/s...

Re: I love it when...

Yeah, I guess just I disagree with that. A game can be hard, but skill should matter. Any aspect of the game that cannot be solved with skill--such as unavoidable deaths or portals that cannot be reached--is, in my opinion, flawed and should be fixed. It is good to hear that the dev team does try to...

Re: New player help

I'm trying to avoid Mephitic Cloud, I see it suggested so much that it seems overpowered, I'd like to see if I can't do well without it, or at least play someone who doesn't have it in their starting spellbook. Why on god's green earth are you doing that? Mephitic Cloud is not overpowered. It is a ...

Sounds like the RNGs are screwing with you. KoBe's don't need Poison blades. Any decent short sword if fine. Even a +3 non-brand will do until Trog starts doing the Santa bit on ya.

Hearing the Labyrinth ticker going nuts... when you're in the Orcish Mines and can't get to it because (it turns out that) it's in another section. (That's two missed Labs in this game, the first one was my own fault though as I was too chicken to charge through the Lair looking for it.) Yeah, just...

Re: Cross-school spellcasting is too easy

I completely disagree that the spells named as "worse offenders" are "offenders" of any kind. Take Deflect, Repel, Swiftness + Flight. Non-Air specialists learn these spells because their schools offer nothing that covers these areas of weakness. What is a spellcaster supposed to...

Two points: 1. I use this spreadsheet to get a sense of how much damage a spell is likely to do. http://www.mediafire.com/?0ymz1ajyjjz It is for an older version of Crawl but it seems to be right. If any dev knows otherwise, I would appreciate knowing. 2. Norris (in fact, most humanoid uniques) are ...

Try burning down a tree with a fire wand or spell.

Re: Some general help for a sort-of-newbie.

As a general rule, I do not turn off Spellcasting. The only time I would do so is if I really want to train one specific skill up one rank. Spellcasting is expensive to train and you need it for more slots and reduced hunger anyway. I have found that leaving it on 90%+ of the playing time is necessa...

Re: "Sif Muna dislikes it when you destroy spellbooks"

Just so it's clear: forgetting a spell via book destruction works like this. Read a book that contains the spell you want to forget with the r command. Then select the spell to read the description. You will see an option F to forget the spell. If you select it, you will forget the spell and destroy...

1. I agree that you are doing the Vaults too early. I would definitely do Orc 1-3 and Hive before messing with the Vault. I would consider doing the Swamp and Snake before the Vault too, at least the early levels. Their difficulty can vary greatly depending on what you draw. Sometimes the Swamps are...

Re: SO... Have you cheated yet?

Everyone should feel free to use wizard mode or "cheat" as they please. Crawl is a brutally, unfairly hard game. Making backups of saves so you don't have to waste countless hours playing L1 - L8 over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...
