I think the answer could be that the designers want this to be an esport and prioritize that over everything else. It's all about the game "balance" and preventing the player from gaming the system by exploiting competitive mobs.

Anticlimactic orb escape

I'm just wondering whether anyone else finds running towards the top floor of the dungeon once you have the orb to be somewhat anticlimactic. It's almost always an easy win at that point. Maybe originally it was harder and more exciting but it got toned down?

Glenn was a man who was turned into a frogman. Afterwards he was quite miserable, but when he finally accepted himself for who he was, a frogman, he learned all kinds of powerful frogman skills and became a great swordsman. I think there's a lesson here, and it ties back into Beogh somehow.

I think the best part of this game is the interface which has ruined every other rogue for me(including older versions of crawl which might otherwise be more interesting to play). I think a good job was done making the beginning of the game a little less grindy. I'd like to see more unpredictability...

Don't skip floors unless there is something risky on the floor. And once your character is strong enough to not be at serious risk from the threat anymore, revisit the floor. God still seems pretty overpowered. Even if you remove serpen'ts lash and the heaven thing it would still be really strong. One restriction that was mentioned at the beginning of this thread that I think makes sense is to have an armor restriction, where you can't equip anything heavier then leather...

I usually wait till D2 and read any scrolls where I have 2 or more till I find the identify scrolls. Then I id scrolls till I find the remove curse scroll so I know what my curse margin is for equipping unknowns. Then I id pots for the curing/heal wound pots, or use it on an early wand.

So I have a vinestalker of makhleb with a fully powered wyrmbane (4runes collected so far) but also a battleaxe and broad axe with the vampiric brand laying in my stash. I could enchant either one to +6 and will likely get more enchant weapon drops since they've been dropping like crazy in this game...
