Fun fact: casting Shadow Creatures in Abyss can summon a 'friendly' Lurking Horror, which will still quite happily torment you when it dies (and is considered non-evil for the purposes of good gods)

The trouble with spells is that just about anything that can be done with spells can also be done with god powers, evocations and ranged weapons, while spending less XP and wearing heavy armour.

Zin hates randomness, so instead of removing mutations randomly, they should be removed in alphabetical order or something.

Or, more sensible, mutations you've had for longest get removed first.

My 2 cents:

Make LCS smite targeted (flavoured as sending a stalagmite-type spear up from the floor rather than shooting from the caster to the enemy.)

Remove wearing rings. Rings have their effect just by being in inventory. Multiple rings of the same type don't stack unless you're an octopode.

I seem to remember reading about someone who went through a ziggurat casting Tornado while worshipping Trog, the deaths from the tornado were enough to counteract the penance so they never actually got hit by Trog's wrath. Or something like that.

What if instead of making constant noise, he amplified any noise you make normally, so it would still be possible to be stealthy, but any spells you cast would be extra noisy, melee would be much more likely to wake up monsters, and of course invocations would still be very loud.

Something about itemdest that is often ignored in this kind of discussion is that it meant that there were some areas of the game where you basically had to go without consumables of a particular type because they were almost guaranteed to be destroyed - eg scrolls in Gehenna and potions in Ice Cave...

To be honest I didn't really think about ranged combat being stronger - I assumed that by the time they see a monster it would already be nearly at melee distance so they wouldn't get much use out of ranged.
