Sounds to me like Abyss grinding is the real problem here.

(I'd be happy if enemies couldn't cast certain spells like Malmutate, Banishment etc. on the first turn they see the player. Certain places are real autoexplore traps as they are now.)

Note that orbs of fire are resistant to cold. Though it may be intuitive, cold is not the best response to them. Something irresistible like Iron Shot/LCS/OOD is probably better, and Glaciate also works simply because it's a level 9 spell with the power to match, but might be a touch mana-inefficien...
