I'd also consider looking at changes from, say, last 3-5 major releases instead of comparing to some ancient version most of the current playerbase have never seen. Maybe then a dev trend towards removals would be more apparent.

The no amulets rule was coined back when amulets of clarity were still in the game and I'm pretty sure that was the reason. I think the general rule is to have fun with whatever version of this challenge you wish to play, just don't expect to get put in hall of fame if you are too lenient on yourself.

Spriggans are surprisingly decent with arbalests, so you can grab one and play like a centaur of sorts. It's good to have some Str items or level up investment for it though or it will take ages to kill things later on.

I just don't like stabbers and spellcasters, I guess.

Removing content doesn't make anything fresh, adding content does. Just saying. Full rotation of lair branches is a neat idea, I'd also like to see some Crypt/Tomb alternative, but that's a lot of work. Power creep.

Besides I'm pretty sure it wouldn't solve the basic problem you're presenting - you'd still run out and you'd still have to use other means of fighting, unless we're talking a lot more starting ammo, which is ridiculous.

The worst part of item identification in Crawl is probably consumable identification. Keeping track of where each potion/scroll in your inventory generated, how many have generated, stacks, which ones were in monsters' inventories, etc. lets you improve your guesses as to which consumable is which....

@ManMan: you could simply outrun most of them and some of those you couldn't run away from easily you could still immobilize with Hexes; the biggest problem honestly was to remember to not kill them.

I played a few games of 0.10 and 0.12 recently. Wands of fire/cold were as bad as acid in monsters' hands. The only difference is that you can't actually have a kobold zapping it on D:2 or so now.
