Re: a(n actual) conversation about dev/player relationships

I think the main issue is the general sense of elitism in the roguelike community as a whole (this is not isolated to Crawl). From the start, roguelikes have been designed with very high difficulty in mind. This naturally results in a small group of players with much better skill than the vast major...

Re: YASD 60 to 0

Welcome to Crawl ! The distortion brand is known to be really nasty. I've had similar experiences in the past: https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=18328 My suggestion is to edit your configuration file so that the game stops with a "More" message ("force_more_mess...

Re: CIP/YASD: GrFi^Makhleb, first runes, mauled at Vaults:5

...and upon review of the log, it is evident why I was unexpectedly teleported: You fly downwards. The tengu reaver hits you but does no damage. Your surroundings suddenly seem different. [...] Aim: a tengu reaver, wielding a great sword of distortion and wearing a scale mail (hasn't noticed you) --...

Re: CIP/YASD: GrFi^Makhleb, first runes, mauled at Vaults:5

You're right that more MR would have helped. I didn't see the paralysis coming. I tried to stair-dance but was denied the opportunity to do so (by a hostile teleport) around the third time I entered the floor. Either blink (towards the stairs) or teleport should have been used at that point instead ...

Re: CIP/YASD: GrFi^Makhleb, first runes, mauled at Vaults:5

...and so the game ends at Vaults:5 with two runes. I probably should have tried to pull out in advance with blink or teleport but got a bit panicked under pressure and became unsure what to do in this complex a situation. I'm very proud I managed to get this far, and I hope to do similarly well (or...

Re: CIP: GrFi^Makhleb, first rune!

I intend to stop training Shields. I'm rather torn on whether to switch to Polearms at the moment. This will depend on what weapons come up as the game progresses, but mindelay will probably be a factor. I was thinking of doing Spider next but it certainly looks like Orc makes more sense at this poi...

CIP/YASD: GrFi^Makhleb, first runes, mauled at Vaults:5

Gargoyle Fighter of Makhleb on DCSS desktop tiles 0.18.1. Character dump: http://pastebin.com/HTd6qHSN This is the first game where I've ever gotten to a single rune. An earlier attempt failed at Snake:4 after some naga teleported me into a position I could not escape from. (Lesson learned: always m...

Re: YASD: Death by Groundhog Day

Bad rolls happen, and trunk isn't exactly the most stable version of the game.

Better luck next time.

Re: Incoming Amulet Reform Discussion

The idea isn't that you shouldn't be able to swap amulets, but that you should be switching them strategically instead of tactically. I'm of the opinion that if this is intended, it would be best to extend the delay for putting on or taking off amulets from 5 auts to 20 auts, which means that switc...

Re: Incoming Amulet Reform Discussion

I don't really see all the point of this "lets add XXX detrimental effect to these amulets so you don't swap them. It serves no purpose really, if you make them bad enough that I wouldn't want to swap them then I just won't wear any amulets until I find one worth wearing. I personally don't fi...

Re: Incoming Amulet Reform Discussion

While I somewhat understand the rationale behind the changes, the concern is that these changes are being made without the appropriate balancing adjustments elsewhere. The key issues are that some amulets are significantly more powerful than others in ways that discourage player choice, and mutation...

Re: Thank you!

I have to say thanks as well. Crawl is a modern and decidedly different approach to the roguelike, and that's what I like about it. It's not intimidating, it's not mysterious, it's not unfair. Crawl is noob-friendly, avoids reliance on spoilers, and is designed so that you can pretty much always win...

Re: YASD: Cast into the Abyss on D:1

A whip of distortion could have killed you with damage too. That's definitely true. A non-banishing hit that comes up as "Space warps horribly around you!" could alone have inflicted enough damage to be lethal. An extra 3-26 points of irresistible damage (biased towards 14.5) is likely to...

YASD: Cast into the Abyss on D:1

In what is best described as a pathological corner case, a character of mine was cast into the Abyss from Dungeon:1 on the first hit by a kobold wielding a whip of distortion (a very unusual brand at this stage in the game). A kobold comes into view. It is wielding a whip of distortion. There is an ...

Re: new logo

I'd probably suggest adding the cauldron in the middle of the separator line, between the words "Stone" and "Soup", or perhaps even in the background behind the text. That would make the logo look more interesting. As it stands, the new logo looks rather boring. The version with ...

Surprise spellbook: Necronomicon on D:5

First post here, so hello! I haven't really spent much time playing Necromancers and I haven't even gotten to one rune in any game I've played thus far (the farthest I've gotten is Swamp:3, XL15 with 71875 points), but this strikes me as very, very surprising: a Necronomicon on D:5 . Sadly, I seriou...
