Centaurs can be good with polearms, but for some reason I'm unimpressed with early polearms generally. Maybe I've just had bad luck the fewer times I've started with them. Centaurs also do well with unarmed, especially early on. It hasn't the slightly deeper penalty of melee weapons and hey, hooves.

I spend some time going back to stashes, but it's usually not a problem food-wise. Many games have so much food late-game that it really doesn't matter.
Unless you're some heavy caster maybe?

On a similar note, playing offline I just passed Sigmund on D2 wielding a Scythe of Distortion.

He teleported me, but very fortunately didn't banish or disintegrate/disrupt me. :o
