Re: I need advice to learn from my Mistakes

Unless you're determined to learn the game yourself, the wiki is a good resource. The 'walkthrough' page of the wiki should give you a general idea of how to proceed. You will see, for example, that the slime pits is an extremely dangerous branch, which you really should not have entered with that D...

YAVP - DsGl of Ash, first 15 runer :)

First time posting here in a long time, but I feel compelled to share my first 15 rune win! Despite fairly pathetic loot throughout the game -- not a single decent artifact armor, glove, or boot - even having cleared out a whole ziggurat! -- I managed the whole thing without much trouble, thanks in ...

Re: "Don't Starve": a game that sounds almost roguelike

OP you may or may not know it, but it seems apropos to bring up UnReal World, a "low-fantasy roguelike game set in the far north during the late Iron-Age." It's a great game, though its open-endedness and commitment to realism can make surviving rather grueling and tedious.

Re: CiP: DrCj of Sif

Centaurs/orc priests/other earlygame ranged threats don't exist in your version of Crawl? Situations where these can't be lured around a corner or quickly nuked are rare - I never find myself wanting more fog scrolls. I'd rather have a tool for quickly dispatching dangerous uniques. But fine, I wit...

Re: CiP: DrCj of Sif

Sure, I guess the steam breath has more staying power than other breath weapons, given that its benefit is not really about damage, but since the early game is the most troublesome part of crawl, I prefer to have a powerful breath weapon early on. Getting red or mottled virtually guarantees that you...

Re: CiP: DrCj of Sif

My condolences on getting the pale variety. In my experience, the upgrade from repel to deflect missiles is unnecessary, so I wouldn't train Air Magic (I'd rather have rMsl + phase shift, if you can find the latter). Training charms for haste is okay, but I would prioritize (if possible) learning bl...

Re: Easy Mode...

I don't think anyone is going to be in favor of a mode without perma-death. It's essential to the genre. I think it's generally agreed that the game already has a sort of implicit difficulty system in species/backgrounds/gods. TrBe, MiFi, DEWz, CeHu - all pretty typical beginner combos that are pret...

You really think abyss isn't more dangerous? Used to be that the worst you'd ordinarily run into were large abominations , bone dragons, smoke demons - nothing that dangerous. But you're right, I dealt with the new enemies all wrong - that's the kind of advice I wanted, thanks.

Surviving the new abyss

I just lost a level 19 DsWz after he got banished in the eleven halls. Prior to the revamping of the abyss, this would be no big deal - I kept on swiftness, repel missiles, and phase shift, had controlled blink at 1%, etc. But I got creamed. Mainly it was those twinkly smiting amoeba things, along w...

Re: YAVP - DEWz, and my first!

Congrats! Looking at your character, I'd just advise that you generally keep skill-mode on manual and only increase one skill at a time, and try not to spread yourself too thin with how many skills your increasing - a Deep Elf pure caster may be the only character that can get away with increasing s...

Indeed, I was just noticing my really poor AC as I posted the morgue. Can't say if I missed any +1/2 accessories - I'd also hope to have a steam/mottled dragon armour on a Skald by this point. And maybe I neglected defensive skills in my enthusiastic pumping of Long Blades. Oh well!

I was sure this would be a many-rune winner, thanks to this prize from the bottom of the Lair: the +10,+9 triple sword of Fate (weapon) {slice, +Fly rC+ rN+ Dex+2}, I'd say the best randart I've ever found. With Spectral Weapon on (my new favorite spell, btw) I was just annihilating everything. So n...

This is more a general question than one about this specific character, but: any opinions on shields with a hybrid character? YASD- DSIE of Chei

Decided to try something new so I went for this Demonspawn Ice Elementalist of Chei. I played him as a hybrid, mixing ice conjurations with some crusader-style melee. Chei's stats made him a pretty strong fighter, which helped offset the smallish mana pool, and his invocations provided some good pan...

Deep Elf Ice/Air Conjurer (original, I know..) So I've gotten a couple of 3-rune wins before, but after I cleared Z:5 with about as much trouble as clearing the Temple, I decided to go to the late game with this character. So far I have beaten Tomb, Slime Pits, and Dis. My arsenal of spells includes...

Re: Any reason to keep junk scrolls or potions?

Random uselessness (aka scroll of summon butterflies) is usually the best escape option for most characters. Scroll of blink is good for victory dancing to train spellcasting. Carry around those scrolls of acquirement, as having them in your inventory increases your resistance to mottled dragons' st...

Agreed that the extra lives are pretty much game breaking. Have won with a Felid Berserker myself, I'd say it's just a weaker version of a Kobold Berserker. They're both overpowered combos for the same reason - you can berserk freely. The Kobold is stronger because it gets armor and weapons, but the...

I'd say bladed weapon of flaming + shield is the most reliable way of melee'ing hydras. Decent shield skill will negate most of the attacks, and pretty quickly you'll be up against a one-headed hydra, which is about as dangerous as a grey rat.

Hill Orc Fighter of Okawaru, nothing fancy. It was my first straight-forward fighter since switching to v0.8, and they seem significantly better than in 0.7.
