Re: rename porcupine, spiny frog

Indeed, Porcupines don't do the one thing you'd expect them to do: reflect damage. Instead they're relatively low HD and high DPS. Maybe mongoose would be better?

Also, the idea of an animal with some form of mirror ain't a bad one...

4% lethality rate is plenty high enough. What's the figure for Vaults:5, for comparison?

Check your mutations after every fight with a mutating monster. In other, obviously completely unrelated, news: teleportitis on Vaults:5 is quite dangerous. (YASD) Also, teleport next to monster is quite dangerous on Zot:5 (YAVP, amazingly). And from my latest game: Erolcha can banish your tiny litt...

I like the idea of an off-hand "orb". What I don't get is: if weapon swapping is the problem, why isn't it for normal weapons?

Observation: you could address some of the same design space with unequip maluses.

Re: duvessa's spell guide for cool people

On Bolt of Magma you write: I don't ever want to see an EE even looking at this spell, there is no reason to ever cast it instead of LRD. That sounds too strong to me. Even you would appreciate having it in the Swamp (joke or not), as LRD is usually not an option there. This is the only bolt-type s...

Re: Proposal for Re-Designing the Hells

Literally, if you think Pan is too long, it's fixable by tweaking a couple of variables. I'm not convinced by Hell RN, but I'm not convinced by this proposal either. I think one of my biggest objections is simply that the geometry of the levels is unremittingly boring. Having no items around just ma...

Re: Remove fighting skill

I personally don't see the problem with having some "heavy commitment" skills like earth magic, where they don't help if you pivot, and "light commitment" skills like fighting and spell Aston get which do. It'd be a problem if 10 points of fighting were fully as good as ten point...

Re: Remove Beogh

So, I've been playing a lot of Yred and Beogh recently and I'd like to say the two are different. Yes they've both got armies, but a living army that can be confused and use polearms behind you is pretty different from a demon army with heavy resistances but no reaching (so you end up with the polea...

Idea: Distinguish stairs

OK, I wanted to see if there's any appetite for this change. As you know, normal stairs are flagged if the other end of them is unexplored, but otherwise look exactly the same on the map. This leads to annoying situations where it's hard to remember which set of stairs go where. If you're trying to ...

Re: Spellcasters and resting

In all seriousness, why not have HP/MP reset to full when you have no threats? eg not poisoned/fainting/etc, no enemies in LOS, and no enemies on the level are on their way to where they remember seeing/hearing you. In fairness, monsters that have any regen could do the same. Well, the obvious prob...

Grief, I hope so. Having a high level charms skill is nigh-on pointless at the moment. Every high level spell has a different school with no synergies.

Re: YARSD: MfSk, OTabber of Yred

I seem to be doing pretty well. I've grabbed a few runes repeatedly over the last week. I'm now raising polearms to 12, then dodging to 10, then fighting and maybe charms. Seems to be more effective now that I'm used to how deadly the early dungeon is to skalds. Especially stupid, however, has to be...

Fixed the tags. Managed to kill two OOFs in melee, haste+might was working. Problem was, it wasn't just an OOF, it was an ancient lich and a couple of other adds. If I'd run (I was fast too...), I could have got some alone time with the OOF and things might have gone a bit differently. :( The joke i...

YARSD: MfSk, OTabber of Yred

Oh grief, this one is super-embarrasing, and I'm still annoyed with myself. The death itself is the least of it: just two OOFs away from getting the Orb and I decide to tank one rather than run away and peel it off. Dumb move, got what I deserved. However, this whole run was a masterpiece of dumb. T...

So I'm definitely getting better at MfIE, but still nowhere close to good enough. I never really used my spells: they just didn't seem to do that much. Hi, I've been playing DCSS for some time, wins with SpEn, DDEE and MiFi(15). But still, it seems like the game is just way harder for a caster (or possibly any EV* based character). Re: YASD - That stupid swamp worm vault

If you've got the book of Geomancy, Swamp worms are vulnerable to petrify, which is very useful. Petrify at range (they hide but unhide when petrified) then walk up an whack them. Or LRD them if they've got friends.

Casters duking it out with swamp worms has never gone well for me...

OK, having learned the importance of Petrify and having a fairly generous set of drops (the early helm was a particular highlight, even with -2 Int) I finally managed to escape with the orb as a DDEE. However, I was certainly eating enough through the Vaults, even with the staff of energy. I was som...

YASD: DDEE dead in The Swamp again

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I'm getting pretty reliably killed while doing the 3-rune levels, and easily the worst of this seems to be the swamp (with rPois Snake Pit seems pretty much perfect for DDEE and I don't think I've ever died there). But the swamp, on the other hand, regularly ...
