I recall Archaeo mentioning something about the disappearance of stickied rules-threads a while back so they seemingly aren't available at present. I also think there were talks of perhaps restructuring the forums somehow, which may mean that the rules are due for an update soon anyway.

I've managed to win a 3-rune game with a MiFi of Trog while using the Shield of the Gong for almost everything post Orcish Mines, so it's very possible even if it's not exactly optimal. If you're "tanky" enough, the noise is almost more of a convenience than a handicap.

I'm not sure there can be any general rules about these things. Depends a lot on your skill, on the brands in question and the base-type of the weapon.
