My point is you effectively have -55% hp. (-10% from the frail, then halve hp again because you can't do anything to escape once rooted). This is more frail than felids and spriggans.

FWIW, I actually found Brogue's combined commands annoying at first. But it works for Brogue because the inventory limit is really small. I think bringing up the entire list of options in crawl would be pretty bad. Maybe not Nethack-BoH bad, but still bad.

With explore mode you can't undo what's already been done. Checkpoints take that away. If the game offered checkpoints, people would feel like that's legitimate play (it isn't for a roguelike). Explore mode feels like you're playing on training wheels.

The reason to not add a checkpoint mode is that the game isn't supposed to be played with checkpoints. Explore mode (and wizard mode) already exist for those who want to remove permadeath. Directly supporting degenerate play (savescumming) teaches bad habits and does not improve the game.

DrFE/Cj is pretty easy. The concept behind skills is pretty simple to melee: get your killdudes up, then do defenses.

The biggest thing to learn is to run to the stairs early and often. Treat 1/3 to 1/4 mp as dead. You never want to be caught without any mp.
