Re: Any chance the abyss is currently broken on trunk?

Not a bug. Intentional (if somewhat counterintuitive and not well-known) behavior; see the ref t o the knowledge bot entry I pasted above. I mean, I've ascended dozens of games, nearly every species & background, and I didn't know it. Well, live and learn.

Re: Any chance the abyss is currently broken on trunk?

Heh. Yeah actually, doing a code dive it looks like abyss_maybe_spawn_xp_exit() will generate only ONE portal out, and all subsequent XP-generated-portals will be DOWN until you actually take a portal down (or you are on A:5). Ugh, it's even documented this way in the knowledge bot entry, albeit not...

Any chance the abyss is currently broken on trunk?

I've been on A:3 and A:4 so long that I've risen to level 27... raised my UC skill to 27... found a learned new sets of spells... it's a whole second life. I've killed uncounted hordes of monsters and it has generated dozens of gates deeper, but never gates out (see the attached pic -- it didn't sen...

Re: Staff of earth vs lajatang of pain

Yeah. I tried on the hauberk but was uncertain what the resulting balance of AC (much higher) and EV (somewhat lower) meant for the character. I decided not to wear it because of the spellcasting impact. Resistances were not an issue because I have no resistances in these slots anyway (and damn few ...

Re: Staff of earth vs lajatang of pain

Sorry, maybe I was unclear about what I was unclear about :). The staves & (outdated) weapon damage wiki pages explain that: - the staff would be d5 (with a million modifiers) + a separate d27 - the lajatang would be d(16) (modifiers) + approx d(9) (and the rest of the modifiers)... and then the...

Re: Staff of earth vs lajatang of pain

Knew I was reviving a relatively old thread but hey, if I googled it I probably wasn't alone :). I never considered that !might would interact with base vs additional damage this way. Thanks for the insight. Having not gone code diving, these interactions are the kind of thing that can be quite impo...

Re: Staff of earth vs lajatang of pain

Just to add some data to this thread: I just set up a level 27 wizard-mode character (stats 15/30/15, approximating a caster-centric hybrid) in 0.16 and did some experimentation; all comparisons are damage per round (the lajatang hitting a bit harder but slower, 7 rather than 6 auts): With all skill...
