Thanks for the clarification, crate. Understanding what you mean now, I tend to agree. From both a flavor and design standpoint, I feel like Nemelex should be more about what you're calling tactical options than one overarching game-long strategy.

Base damage with claws is 8, base damage with Blade Hands is 12, plus a bit extra from Dex/Str, if I recall correctly.

I'd say go ahead and use Blade Hands when you need to slap someone's shit hard.

Really depends on the definition of 'gimmick', which, if you ask me, is all different kinds of ephemeral these days. Example: I'd call octopodes and felids less 'gimmicky' than vampires and deep dwarves, for the exact same reasons you list. Granted, I'm not saying anything about any of those gimmick...
