Chei would've been proud that you didn't renounce him outright.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

Rupert really is the Sigmund of Lair. If Sigmund had berserk rage. And a great sword of electrocution.

Re: Remington Jr. ponders which armour to choose

Assuming Jr.'s not dead already, I'd go with the plate by default + wear the AC ring, then switch to the poison ring when bees and snakes start appearing in large numbers. Wear the dragon armor for fiery encounters, of course. As for enchanting, I'd hold off until you get something like a branded pl...

How do you feel about death?

Hey all, outside the Crawl universe I'm a lowly journalism student. I'm doing a project on death in roguelikes (Crawl in particular) and I want your input on player death and permadeath in general. This isn't a thread to argue game design, but instead one to explain how you personally feel about cha...

YASD - Wiglaf with a bow

In my opinion, I think it's a little absurd that any enemy can pick up a bow and do insane damage with it simply based upon their hit die. It uses the logic of "the enemy is twice as strong, so he must be able to shoot the arrow twice as hard!" Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.8.0-a0-531...

Re: Wizards

I think this is a just a matter of preferred playstyle. With the holy trifecta of mephitic cloud, blink, and repel missiles, you can afford to make a whole lot of mistakes because you almost always have a reliable escape. Meanwhile with an ice elementalist, you've got the direct damage spells and oz...

Re: Don't know what I am capable of

As a one-time user of enchanted steel javelins myself, I can assure you that those javelins will last you pretty much the entire game, unless you throw them into deep water or lava by accident. I'm pretty sure enchantment increases durability of javelins.

How OOD is OOD?

I'm currently playing a naga air elementalist, and my facial twitch went into overdrive when I found a pack of skeleton warriors on dlvl 10; I currently see two, but with these guys I just know there's two or three more lurking around a corner. That said, I don't have anything to take these guys dow...

Re: What's the consensus on the possibility of shapeshifting

Another consideration is the rather limited purpose of shapeshifting. Few monsters have a ranged attack that doesn't use ammo or have a breath timer, so... the variety is limited. We've got low ac fast (spider form), high ac slow (statue form), ice (ice beast), fire (dragon form), high damage withou...

Re: Most dangerous uniques (minus Sigmund)

I'll second Aizul. In 0.7 his setup is absurd: fast guardian naga with high hp that can sleep you, along with an unresistable projectile attack that can do 40+ damage per turn.

Honorable mentions to the Lernaean Hydra, Snorg, and Crazy Yiuf's quarterstaff of chaos.

Re: I just need to rant

I typically have little trouble with Grinder; he seems just as threatening as a regular imp, pesky but nothing to worry about. The problem I usually have is that he wakes up every other monster in the vicinity, and suddenly I'm facing Grinder, orcs, gnolls and phantoms. all at once.

YASD - Killed by a trunk in trunk

For all you players who don't use extreme caution when facing unfamiliar enemies, this one goes out to you. Note that I had already stair-danced approximately 8 other elephants (elephant packs? great idea!) and although they were tough, I didn't have trouble felling them. Then... this sonofagun show...
