You should be fine in the Abyss since you have a staff of energy and lots of food. Always use it to regen MP while you're in there. Also before you die you can press "+" to enter "explore mode" that lets you not die, but prevents your game from being scored. It could be good to have the option upon dying though.

What you could do is put it all in the ready() function and condition it to only run once :

It's not very elegant, but it should do what you want.

Unfortunately what I want to do is change options while in the middle of autoexploring, which you're telling me is impossible (short of rewriting autoexplore in Lua).

Demigods can be pretty hard to play, I would rather advise you to play Gr or Hu for a mage (GrEE is very strong, IE is a very strong background for anyone).

That chain mail probably gives way better defenses than the faerie dragon scales, without sacrificing rCorr. Try them both on and take the one which gives the most AC+EV. I would not dare go to Slime with a MiBe using Mace&Flails anyway.
