Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

Also, Qaz makes Vaults 5 a blast! I'm not sure if the pun was deliberate or not, but either way, I groaned. (Random thought: Cause Fear + Disaster Area means everybody catches a nuke.) With high enough invocation, there is actually a chance to kill even stuff directly adjacent to you with Disaster ...

Re: Advice and Approaches to Tackling the Extended End Game

While on this topic, are there any conditions or requirements that you feel need to be met before even thinking about the extended end game? Like reliable access to certain spells, resistances etc.? Or do you make a character with the intent of doing extended? Similarly, are there things you conside...

Re: Enter the Mid-game

Learn summon imp. Most times, mephitic cloud and conjure flame will take care of things for you. Sometimes though, you just need to spawn a bunch of imps. They can kill decently well for a while and are good meat shields in corridors to run. Red ones not as much, but still useful. Eh, for me the im...

Re: Enter the Mid-game

I would take Magipiʻs advice. Cj or FE are much easier backgrounds than Wz. IE is probably the easiest book start, although less blastery. And VM is one of the best backgrounds to get to Lair (and very good all the way). Conjurer is pretty much a pure blaster. As long as you have mana, it should be...

Re: Enter the Mid-game

Wizard is not one of the easiest backgrounds, it is quite tricky. If you want a straightforward (and strong) background for blaster casters, try conjurer. I personally much prefer Wizard. Pretty much every time I play a caster background that isn't Wizard I die to random Centaur appearing at worst ...

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

I'm still trying to get Shield of the Gong with a Qaz-ite. Got it on my FoFi^Qaz from Shoals 4-5. It - along with 25 Invocations - made rest of the 3-rune run pretty entertaining, especially Vaults 5. Likely the last time I want to use it on a melee-centric character though. It was midly annoying h...

Re: First time in Vaults

Vaults 5 is the reason I love qazal. It is half suicidal, but bringing the whole zone to you immediately due to qaz noise and blowing disaster areas until you run out of piety/magic potions and the ground is just covered in lava pools is tremendously gratifying. Such characters never win. They die ...

Re: First time in Vaults

Uhh... Vaults: 5 is literally the hardest floor in the whole game for a lot of characters. I -never- would recommend it as a 3rd rune. Yes; Ancient Liches, Titans, High Tier Dragons (Quicksilver, Iron, Golden, Shadow), High-tier elves...All the worst stuff in the game (except demons) thrown togethe...

[YAVP] FoFi^Qazlal

After winning with GrFi^Chei twice (the second one because I heard there was a bug that doubled player melee damage for large portions of the first win) and failing a few times with MiMo^Chei I decided I needed some change of pace, in more ways than one. I wanted to play a high AC character, but fig...

Re: Weapons/Spells for a stabber?

Based on the last stabber I played: Ensorcelled Hibernation - something wakes while you're sneaking to eviscerate unnoticed? Put it back to short-term sleep, then make sure that the sleep is forever. Confusion - similar to above, something thinks it has the right to be safe from your chronic backsta...

Re: Proposal: Yet another equipment god

The concept is interesting, but I feel the downsides/restrictions aren't really that well defined. With that in mind, my take on it: Idea in short: - Equipment god that favours dedication to and honing one's skill with chosen equipment. - Slow growth in power for equipment. - Chance/piety-based upgr...

Re: Returning to DCSS, back to basics

Cheers for the advice. Yeah, my scrolls could indeed use identifying. Need to check up how many dangerous ones I have left unidentified. Same for pots, Of the branches, Lair and Orc I'm quite familiar with. If memory serves I've reached last level in few of the Rune branches as well (the Spriggan di...

Re: Returning to DCSS, back to basics

Added current dump. Guessing I'm switching to Protection weapon for now, since my spells are all only 1-5% miscast right now. Starting skilling of Fighting for now I guess, since my HP is pretty low. Thanks for the answers thus far, more suggestions are welcome though. If it doesn't show up on the d...

Returning to DCSS, back to basics

As per title, I'm returning to Crawl after ~year long break. I continuing with my old Spriggan Enchanter for few hours, only to die to carelessness, Good fun, especially considering I abandoned the character as "hopeless" year ago due to being short-sightedly tunnel-visioning on same route...
