Re: Real-world references

I was expecting this thread to be an incredibly painful read and it was far more productive and interesting than I thought. I have no intention to involve myself in the discussion except to ask, since when has "wucad" ever been theoretically correct pinyin? It certainly is not Mandarin, at...

Re: Change rank 3 of demonspawn mana shield facet

I'd think that if some player has 20 hp and 30 mana, they would value regenerating +1 hp to be the same as +1 mana. The idea is that if MP was actually in short supply, the increase in MP regeneration would be significant as long as you are using MP for something else, since it would allow you to c...

Re: Don't make ogre a fat human

Here is the thing about arguments based on flavor: You can argue in favor of literally anything based on flavor, because flavor is entirely subjective . What the heck does "intuitive spellcasting" even mean, for instance? Last I checked Crawl didn't have an Intuition stat. You realize thi...

Re: Playable skeleton species! (Branch inside)

I thought of a charms spells a few weeks ago that trades mesmerization for a strong defensive benefit, probably involving monsters losing their turns or being forced to move towards you similar to Sil's song of mastery, but with the drawback of mesmerization. It's intesresting to see that proposed f...

Re: Balancing the Council God

A point of feedback on high-EV/low AC chars, since a usable god(dess) for those seems to have been one of the design goals. Council is not working with octopodes, and I'd imagine with other high EV/low AC chars. If you need a shield, and many high EV/low AC chars do, current shield implementation p...

Re: Balancing the Council God

Thank you! This probably doesn't encourage anyone to listen to what I have to say, but I don't want to see WJC go in any of the directions I brought up either! Except I don't think loss of status effects would end up as that big of a change and it might be a slight step towards toning down the power...

Sorry for posting twice, but in case anyone doesn't think lunge is good: http://i.imgur.com/X7cqn2y.png That is lunging at an orb of fire, missing it and killing it in one hit anyway with anti-magic bite. That happened before the change from damage multipliers to flurries on martial attacks, but I'm...

Re: Balancing the Council God

Lots of interesting points in this thread. I fully agree with everyone saying that it would be counterproductive to make significant changes for at least a few weeks or else it will be impossible to build an informed consensus on what needs changing and what does not. I'm probably not the most exper...

Re: Fox race?

I actually proposed and even wrote up a Chinese fox spirit species a few weeks ago. The thread is probably a page or two back, but what I have now is fairly different from what I wrote there. I have no attachment to the flavor of foxes, though, and I think Hulijing mostly just end up assuming the fo...

Re: Weapon-less Ieoh Jian Council (now implemented)

It might be better to just cap the number of bites per turn to something like 1, 2 or 3 depending on the speed of your weapon. I can't remember exactly, despite having read the code and playing a VS^IJC, but can't you get cleaving bites now? That might be a bit much. But simply biting the same numbe...

Re: Rework polearms

I think reaching changes the way you play the game and gives more options than what you propose would. I think what you suggest would mostly be like a passive bonus that only comes up sometimes and lets you do some extra damage, not something that informs how your character fights. I also think your...

Re: Is Song of Slaying broken?

The book of battle is great! Song of slaying actually becomes more powerful later on when you can expect to fight large groups more and can handle attracting a lot of attention. It's quite dangerous to use early, though. Spectral weapon is amazing early and falls off later, but always remains very g...

Re: Rework polearms

(Incidentally, any simulationist should want reaching removed. A big spear would be impractical for one person in close quarters. It follows that spears in Crawl are really stubby.) Reach is incredibly important in considering the effectiveness any weapon. What's more, most spears can simply be hel...

Re: Rework polearms

That's a fair request. I thought that most people were of the same opinion as me, so I didn't spell out my reasons. The burden of proof should be on someone who thinks reaching should exist. Why is it an interesting ability? As far as I can see, it's just simulationism. However, in the rest of the ...

I suspect it will be considered more valuable now, but in the past I always thought repel missiles at decent power was enough and only went for dmsl on an air mage with haste or a something like a DE/HE^Ash for whom it's dirt cheap anyway.

Re: Rework Ring of Flames

I think there's almost no reason for anyone to train charms up past 10 anymore, and that's only on characters with a good apt that have battlesphere early. I haven't gone past 5-6 in any of my recent games. Maybe there's more draw to invest in Charms to get deflect missiles, but the charms dependenc...

Monsters without resistance are paralyzed and heavily poisoned. Monsters with rP- are insta-killed. This is too many differe...

Re: Weapon-less Ieoh Jian Council (now implemented)

I'm careful not to break the balance that we have achieved with the three martial attacks, so I'd rather take from other aspects of the god before touching these. That was my intention with the removal of cross-training. I'm still quite intrigued by the idea of claustrophobia, so I might just make ...

I played a VpEn to V: 5 today and have a few points. First of all, I really hope this god is added to Trunk! It would be an amazing addition to the game. The movement abilities are a whole lot of fun. I don't know if this is intentional, but whirlwind is quite similar to Sil's flanking and whirlwind...

Double post, but I finished implementing the species. I don't know how the balance will work out and I'm unsure about the off-hand attack. Now I have it as simply the basic off-hand punch, but Hulijing don't check unarmed skill to use it and get + xl/5 bonus base damage. However, it still does benef...

Re: Proposal for a New Hybrid Species: Hulijing

Double MP costs and the off-hand always being active makes things a lot simpler and is probably much better. I'm still worried that the early game will be too tough for most caster starts because double MP cost is pretty brutal (e.g. spell failure kills your one chance to use meph cloud and you're s...

there're so many words in the OP I can't actually find where the gimmick of the race is actually spelled out Point taken. Doubly so since you completely misunderstood the gimmick. CKR not updating to scoring page

CKR went down some time in early January, was down for a few weeks, then came back up. I played a game there last week after it came up, but that game has not been updated to my scoring page. Although I can't speak Korean, using online translation, I was able to piece together that I am not the only...
