Re: Set spellbooks to autopickup by default under Trog

Seconded. I just played a game where I went Trog->TSO for extended and got to play the "ctrl+f for every spellbook in the dungeon, fast travel to it to pick it up, waste some food and piety(*)" minigame. It was not fun. (*) the reason I wasted piety was because I already did one level of c...

Re: Tiles: Add Option for General Threat Level Icons

This is too cluttered for my taste. I would much rather just see the monster list implemented for offline tiles.

At the very least I would reserve the mark for dangerous and extremely dangerous enemies.

Re: where to go?

d11 -> lair -> orc -> d15 -> lair branches is my standard order. Sometimes I change it up due to circumstances. The relative difficulty of each of these places changes based on your character. Sometimes I'll leave orc for later if I don't have enough MR to not get paralyzed by orc sorcerers or if I ...

Re: unseen horror

If you are strong enough to melee with them but have no way to show their location then I find the easiest way is to go to a corridor and then repeatedly attack in place by holding ctrl plus a direction. It is much less effort than moving back and forth. But it can be dangerous if you don't have eno...

Re: Make animate skeleton animate a random target

Can we also change Animate Dead to affect a number of corpses (depending on spell power) instead of all of them? This has one problem. Say you finish a large battle and there are corpses and loot strewn about. You cast Animate Dead. Some zombies appear. How can you know if there are more corpses le...

Re: Make animate skeleton animate a random target

One simple and effective way to nerf Animate Dead (or Animate Skeleton, for that matter) would be the following: A corpse is revived as a zombie with some chance and destroyed otherwise. The chance increases with increasing spellpower and decreases with increasing monster HD. This is roughly the ap...

Re: Make animate skeleton animate a random target

One advantage of animate skeleton is not having to pick up chunks, do you expect that will go away (introducing tedium back into the equation, sort of negating the point of your proposal) or do you propose that the chunks created will 'jump' into your inventory (which would constitute a slight powe...

Make animate skeleton animate a random target

So everyone knows that animate skeleton is problematic. It is a no-brainer for any character that is not forbidden from magic/necromancy. It is way overpowered for its level. But the worst thing is that it is so tedious to use. If you are playing optimally you get to play the boring minigame of movi...

Re: What Tactical advice revolutionised your playstyle?

One thing that took me forever to realize, but when I did it had a massive effect on my winrate: If a fight is going bad you can just walk away from it. Not blink, not teleport, not haste, just simply walk at 1.0AUT while in contact with monsters. Usually if combat started and I had no escape consum...

Re: Fighter shield?

Yeah, well if you're playing optimally wouldn't you always choose MiBe to begin with? No. It's a common misconception, there are games (not crawl) where my win rate is higher but it does not mean I have to play them instead of crawl. The game starts after picking species/background. That's subjecti...

Re: Fighter shield?

I will train my skills in the optimal order. And then when I find a 2 hander, I will stick with a one-hander and shield because that is why I picked the fighter background. I see, I am always going to use a shield when I start as Fi too. But then I find some 2h vampiric weapon in a different weapon...

Re: Fighter shield?

If I'm a long blade or mace user I'll just train the shield and stick with one-handers. Scimitars and morning stars will last you long enough until you find the top tier one-handers. If I'm a using axes or polearms I'll ditch the shiled as soon as I find a decent two-hander. But then again, if I do...

I consider good loot anything that helps me killdudes and/or not get killed by dudes. Loot has different rarity but that doesn't mean rare loot > common loot. You can easily win the game with only basic items because scrolls of enchantment and branding are a thing. If you want something more specifi...

Re: Casual League Week 29 - DsSk

In keeping with the theme I would like something that prevents focusing on just a few skills. Maybe win a 3-rune game with 5-6 skills at 20+. Not sure on the math on this though. And there would have to be a caveat to prevent xp grinding. Maybe only allow dungeon, lair, orc, 3 runes branches and dep...

Re: Casual League Week 29 - DsSk

Can you change tier3 please? It seems tedious and trivial. Actually sounds quite fun if you go the hybrid route! I just dont know about 15 runes. Maybe go Ash? It has no effect on your build. All you have to do is stop training your highest skills at 26.9 which is functionally equivalent to 27. The...

Re: Tip: Ambrosia is great for Pakellas and Deep Dwarves

Ambrosia is awesome for so many characters and in many situations.

There are many ways to isolate yourself from damage while ambrosia outscales the incoming damage. Treeform, summoned allies, conjure flame, self-casting mephitic cloud (in cases where you couldn't avoid self-targeting) etc.

Skills: O Level 27 Spellcasting - Level 16.0 Conjurations + Level 24.0 Fire Magic Training spellcasting to 27 way before your attack schools is suboptimal. Hungerless casting is not a worthy goal because the spells kill stuff that you can eat so they essentially pay for themselves. Besides, there's...

YAVP MiBe of Trog: First 15-rune win

I have 5-6 normal wins under my belt but I've been obsessed with finishing a 15-rune game. I don't really like extended that much cause I think it takes too long (heck I even think a 3-rune win is a bit long) but I wanted to complete the challenge at least once. I went with the classic MiBe of Trog ...
