In crawl, idle/useless skills, xp, gold, etc. get you killed. Don't skill air when you could be skilling something that directly contributes to your survival right now.

One thing that would help in the long run is cutting a lot of the bad character types so that you're not balancing the whole game around keeping them viable.

Also, re: smaller maps, imo part of the problem is intricate maps with narrow corridors. One of few things tomenet got right: Corridors should always be at least 2 squares wide. Get rid of the spirals, generate fewer hairpin turns.

Kiku's good for melee dudes. Guaranteed endgame quality weapon by the end of lair, miscast protection for a school where the good spells don't need spellpower. Get zombies anywhere. Solid choice.

Don't skill stealth to 27. You've already wasted a ton of xp, don't send good money after bad. Because xbows are a better defensive skill than shields. Yes, diminishing returns on physical skills tends to start after 2 runes. That's what spells like phase shift and shadow creatures are there for. Cloud spells are conjurations, hence bad.

Polearms are not just slightly worse than M&F. If you cannot reliably exploit the range of polearms in fights, it is not worth 4 to 6 extra xp levels to use them. One extra attack is not reliably exploiting range.
