If you have the spell or lugonu and your character is a stabber and has no XP problems then distortion is one of the best brands in the late game particularly if you have deflect missile. It is also good for various sprints. Warp weapon is probably one of the more underrated spells in the game.

IMO arcane marksmen is basically a stealth hexer. Don't waste time with the launchers, train sblade and a little stealth. Hex spell books seem to be fairly common in the game. If you see a shield with any resistance you should absolutely use the shield since Crawl I think seriously over powers resistance (yes even at one +).
That is rF+, rC+ and basically any r* (even rMagic and rPois) seriously trumps the offhand punch.

My advice on transitioning from melee to magic for new users is not to do blaster master but rather hexes. Hexes are so strong early and you need stealth anyway for most magic users. Also might want to consider not picking Veh or Sif. I think Dith, Ash, Fedhas and Kiku are better gods for most magic...
