A felid with HP-40% benefits the most from spirit shield, but felids usually lean on spells a lot; sometimes spirit can drain your MP so much that it blocks you from using some MP-dependent ability that could save your life.

I second using SLS for blocking muts. If you put one directly in between you and a shining eye or a neqoxec, it at leasts prevents getting mutated from distance, and if just might kill 'em by itself. Butterflies is also useful, but way less reliable as malmutate blockers.

I've now done NewTomb with two statuecats. As a statformer, I'd prefer 3 ?mappings, optimally have rN++ from gear, some ?tele, as much !haste as possible as you might get slowed, CBlink, Aura of Abjuration, Borg to recover from mistakes, and maybe Irradiate for a bit of an AoE spell.

No but it prevents paralysis. You can !cancel yourself out of petrification, meaning you actually have a tactical option. I've often ?tele'd myself out of danger, can't do that with Para.

I just want to add that one, under no circumstances, should pick up the orb before fetching more runes. The orb run was the hardest by a wide margin. Both extra lives lost, and without Borg, probably the last one as well. Truly a comedy of errors.

I can see why at least all-runing cats without the big 3 wands becomes a lot more dangerous. In my most recent 0.19 game, I don't think the recent changes would've made a difference in 3 runes, but all-runing cats without /hasting and /HW would feel a lot worse.

As for the lack of a ranged attack, I find Iron Shot to be underwhelming as a statformer. My reasoning is: statform makes melee a lot better, but everything else a lot worse.
