I'd hop on the "Malmutate gives very bad longer-lived temporary mutations" bandwagon, personally. Maybe a moderate chance for a permanent mutation to leak through sometimes, but altogether more of a tactical effect, less of a strategic one.

But I'd expect FP to have some advantage over the direct-fire type weapons, since it requires guessing where the opponent will be (not generally too hard), and a 20 aut delay, instead of firing where the enemy is right now , and doing damage right now . The ancient Dacian falx has a nearly 90 degree curve in it, and it was fearsome enough that it motivated the Roman armies in the area to adopt new armor to guard against its deadly effects.

I feel like Fe^Oka should be pretty strong, Felid unarmed + Heroism + Finesse sounds pretty strong. Probably not as strong as Fe^Trog, but Trog > Okawaru in general if you're exclusively looking at divine abilities.

In response to the original question - it obviously depends heavily on starting selection and the RNG, but I've found that Crawl has multiple peaks of difficulty: D1, D2 - relatively easy, probably more due to practice than anything else D3-D7ish - difficulty peak.
