I've found that Nikola is a lot less deadly if you can meet him in Shoals, with a bunch of plants around you.

I, too, wonder about the helpless message. Can monsters get "stab"-type attacks on you as well, now, if they can act before you see them? If so, this shows why it's a bad idea from a gameplay perspective.

Well, I thought in terms of comparative advantage. The times you choose a sword or an axe over a club are already very rare with ogres, they would be rarer still if M&F is increased. Increasing fighting is better to preserve diversity. I'm not entirely confident how better fighting will play out...

Paladins were removed with very little input from players. I would not at all mind getting them back (though they need more distinction now that all fighters get long blades - better starting armour, perhaps?)
