Yeah, they're really good with ranged attacks, especially with oka. As for slowing down in the end game, I don't think that's so. Skills at 27 eat up so many points, and instead having them at 16 across the board makes them incredible tank mages. I'm trying to figure out what's the best god for them...

I don't see the reason that the new gnoll species can't have its attributes boosted by rings or gods. It's currently the worst species in the game by a large margin at the moment but allowing it to join chei or make use of a +5 ring would almost make it playable.

I never said it wasn't. I said it's underused because if you can win with it you can win without it. That's bad criterion IMHO, it is not too hard to win with 15 runes as DEBe without abandoning Trog. Does it mean all spells are underused? Just write a Lua script to do that. And to swap gear to eat poison chunks. And to warn you if you're about to cast invisibility while contaminated.
Basically any sort of automatic action or warning can be done with Lua.
