I don't understand why the developers have added so many insta death monster to D1. You don't have any items or god powers to use and no way to escape.

I can't count the number of times I have had groups from 3 to 9 pop out of thin air around me. I'll go up a stair to escape and try to move to a stair up and pooff a group shows up. Normally is while I'm close (2-4 tiles) to the stairs I just came up.

Was fighting my first Ancient Lich as a follower of the Shining One and cleansing flame had no effect. In fact it seamed to heal the Lich.

I had to tele away and come back and hack it down.

Isn't a Lich an undead and doesn't cleansing flame cause unavoidable holy damage?

Don't wait to be low on HP before escaping. I often use teleportation (and sometimes even blinking) while still at full HP. It requires some experience with game though. Or you can just check monsters list - if you have 3+ "extremely dangerous" monsters in LoS, it's probably time to escap...
