I'd say it's not worth it, unless you enjoy navigating the labyrinth. I occasionally get the small amount of loot you describe. Besides, do monsters drop loot other than by dying?

My spriggan stabbers have liked Desolation quite a bit so far. The clouds make stabbing easier, and when things go awry, the clouds help with running away to reset.
