When I've finished a level, I just take the nearest stairs down, then as I explore the new level and find an unused upstairs, I quickly pop up and back down. So I end up using every stairway, but it's not tedious at all.

One other downside is that it's fairly loud. You need to be prepared for more and more opponents wandering in. With enough mana reserve, it's not bad, but early on it's easy to run out and find yourself in more of a target rich environment than you really want. I know I need to use it more than I do...

Depends on how it's shaped. 15kg is enough in a sphere with a neutron reflector. 52kg in a bare sphere is critical for U-235, but in the shape of a sword, it would certainly be subcritical.
