If you enter Lair:1 and are immediately greeted by Fannar and Harold... just read !Tele immedately. Not even the stairs can save you.

I made the error of going for the strairs right away; got Netted by Harold and died.

Yes; MR is not required to win the game.

Neither is worshiping a god.

Nothing is required to win the game. But a lot of things greatly help. You'll be wishing you had that MR when a Lich in Depths/Zot Abyss 5's you.

I like Crossbows; but dear lord are they the Magikarp of weapon classes. Bolts are so rare early that if you start with XBows you basically have to pray your ammo doesn't mulch away and you find an early Oka, and/or a decent second stack of bolts. XBow starts HAVE to go Oka. There's no other choice....
