Just finished A Deepness in the Sky, now working on Solaris. I was expecting "The Ocean is alive!" to be the big reveal, but they explain that within the first couple chapters, and since then it's only gotten weirder and more interesting.

There have been a few hints at reasons - descriptions of the current situation such as "stupid", "annoying", "awkward and bad", and a description of using corpse animation to get around the limitation, but nobody has given a reason why doors being locked open by corpse...
